Being Discharged

“I went to the super yesterday, big bro. Look forward towards today’s dinner.”

“Oh? Is it something nice?” I asked Ley,y, my sister, with a smile.

“Of course. I’m going all out for today’s dinner. After all, we are celebrating that you were discharged.”

“I’m looking forward to it.” I smiled gently and rubbed Ley’s head.

It was the day after Sylvia visited me, and I was finally being discharged.

I did not have any visible or internal wound, so I should have been discharged one day sooner, but because mom wanted to make sure that nothing was wrong, I went through a few additional check-ups before being discharged.

However, nothing was wrong with me. In fact, I was better than ever.

As soon as I left the hospital, I heard a car’s horn ringing.

“Jane, Ley, here!”

We looked in the direction of the voice and saw a young woman waving her hand towards us from inside a car.

Outside the car, and young man and a girl our age waved at us happily.

“Andrew, Jessica!” Ley waved back to the young man and the girl before greeting the woman in the car. “Mrs. Kim, how are you?”

“Hi there, little Ley.” The woman smiled softly. “Your mother told me to come for you. Come, get into the car.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Kim.”

“Hahaha, we are like family, little Ley. No need to thank me. And you, Jane, how long do you plan to stay in the sun. Get into the car too.” The woman said while looking at me.

“Yes.” I smiled and nodded.

Just before getting into the car, the young man outside it patted me on the shoulder with a grin.

“Does it feel good to Awaken?”

“It does,” I grinned back.

“I-I’m happy for you, brother-in-law.” Said the girl beside the young man happily.

“I’m no longer your brother-in-law, Jessica.” I smiled wryly.

The three people that came for us were respectively Kalie Bartlett, Andrew Matthew, and Jessica Kim.

Karlie Bartlett was the mother of Jessica and my ex-girlfriend, Karime. She was a woman in her thirties with black hair and black eyes.

Her family and ours have been neighbors for many years, so we are very familiar with each other.

Normally, I call her Mrs. Kim.

Andrew Matthew, on the other hand, is my best friend. He is sixteen years old just like me, with blond hair, blue eyes, and a warm personality. Also, he is pretty lucky with girls.

Finally, Jessica Kim is the little sister of my ex-girlfriend, Karime Kim. Just like with Karime, we have been good friends for many years, and our relationship is pretty good.

By the way, Jessica is fifteen just like Ley, and they are very close friends. They are as close as blood-related sisters, many times even sleeping in the same bed.

These three, together with my mother, my little sister, and my ex-girlfriend, can be considered as the people closest to me. Due to it, I did not find it strange when they came to receive me after being discharged from the hospital.

“Are you alright, Jane?” Mrs. Kim asked while she was driving. “We were very worried when we learned that you were in the hospital.”

“It’s alright. It was just a side-effect of my Awakening.”

“Are you sure? Did the doctors check you carefully? What if something is–”

“I’m alright, Mrs. Kim.” I calmed her down with a wry smile. “In fact, I’m better than always. My body feels full of energy.”

“Yeah, Mrs. Kim, don’t worry.” Andrew intervened at this time. “He was even in the mood to flirt with girls while he was hospitalized, so he must be alright.”

The atmosphere inside the car froze completely.

I felt a cold stare coming from my little sister, and at the same time, I felt that Mrs. Kim and her daughter, Jessica, had strange expressions.

“… Yeah, I think I should have not mentioned that.” Andrew’s expression was awkward.

It’s too late for that, buddy.  I rolled my eyes and put on a bitter smile.

“It’s just a misunderstanding. Sylvia is just a friend. She was just teasing me back then.”

“… Well, I should not interfere in the younglings’ affairs.” Mrs. Kim forced out a smile, but it was obvious that she was feeling awkward.

Actually, a great part of my good relationship with Mrs. Kim was due to my relationship with her daughter, Karime. We had been lovers for many years, so she was used to treating me like a son.

Due to it, now that I broke up with Karime, it’s normal if things become a bit awkward.

“… B-By the way, Jane, did you awaken any skill? I-I heard that you awakened one.”

I rolled my eyes at my friend’s forced attempt to change the topic.

‘… It would have been better if you don’t mention Sylvia in the first place.’

Even so, I was grateful to him and hurriedly grabbed this saving line.

“Let me show you,” I said and extended my hand. Immediately, small lightning bolts started to slither around it.

Ley, Andrew, Jessica, and Mrs. Kim were surprised.

“… Lightning, huh. That is neat.”

“… So that is brother’s skill.”

“… So cool.”

I basked in the gazes of admiration of the three of them as I put on a smug smile.

“Nice, right? I call it [Lightning Seed].”

“That is a strange name. Why don’t you call it Lightning Control? That is better.” My sister asked.

I explained then the basics of my lightning skill to the group. When they learned that I should be able to shoot lightning balls from my hands eventually, they were impressed.

Thanks to that, the awkward atmosphere in the car disappeared.

We continued talking while Mrs. Kim drove, and twenty minutes later, we arrived at my house.

I lived in a villa in a nice part of the city. My family was a bit affluent, so our living conditions were not bad.

Of course, we were not exactly rich. But we were not poor either.

Just when we exited the car, we saw a girl leaving the house next door.

Our gazes crossed, and immediately, the atmosphere became awkward again.

“… Hello, Jane.” The girl said with a forced smile.

It was Karime, my ex-girlfriend.
